I have always been a curious soul… wandering and wondering about life and what imbues it with meaning.

When I was 19 I embarked on a solo trip to South America. My plan was to drink medicine in the jungles of the Amazon and welcome my 20th revolution around the sun… this was before ayahuasca tourism was a thing, before medicine ceremonies were popular within the neo-tribal-festival scene.

Whilst the Madre called to me, meeting with the vine of the soul never came to pass as I returned home to Townsville in a neck brace. (Different story)

The biggest initiation on that journey was walking the Inca Trail.

Anyone who has done it before will be familiar with the feeling of anticipation and awe starting the trail at Ollantaytambo, accomplishment making it through Dead Woman’s Pass and the sense of completion reaching Inti Punku for the first glimpse of the sacred Mountain and Machu Piccu.

What was interesting for me though, was once I actually got onto the grounds I felt quite irritated with all the clean tourists just walking through snapping pictures and talking loudly.

It was unnerving for me because after treking for 3 days all I wanted more than anything was a moment of stillness to breathe it all in..

To let the awe wash through me.

Because I did it.

It was no longer a dream… I was living it.

A small young woman from Townsville with a broken heart that was mended with each step I took when I honoured the little whisper within.

The 21 days I experienced in Bolivia and Peru changed me on a very deep level.

Humbled me in a way that still brings me joy.

Helped me to deepen my empathy and fascination with the Human Spirit.

Gave me courage to keep walking… Even though my whole body burned with fatigue

I made peace with being a loner.

And instilled the innate ability to look at the world with wonder.

To notice the profound beauty and wisdom in the moment.

To be kinder and more real than I had ever allowed myself to be.

A gift.

An experience only made possible by the support of mum and dad.

And I think about how that investment in me has made beautiful ripples into the world.

Special.
